AS SENATOR DAVID ALECHENU BONAVENTURE MARK PICKS THE PDP NOMINATION FORM FOR THE PRESIDENCY THIS WEEK. WE TAKE A BRIEF LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF THIS ICON, THAT HAS BECOME A REOCCURRING DECIMAL IN THE NIGERIAN POLITICAL SPACE. HISTORY OF HOBBES

CHAPTER 6. CURRICULUM: POLITICAL THEORY Thomas Hobbes Thomas_Hobbes_(portrait) Thomas Hobbes was a 17th-century English philosopher who is on hand to guide us through one of the thorniest issues of politics: to what extent should we patiently obey rulers, especially those who are not very good – and to what extent should we start revolutions and depose governments in search of a better world? Hobbes’s thinking is inseparable from one major event that began when he was 64 years old – and was to mark him so deeply, it coloured all this subsequent thinking (remarkably he died when he was 91 and everything he is remembered for today he wrote after the age of 60). This event was the English Civil war, a vicious, divisive, costly and murderous conflict that raged across England for almost a decade and pitted the forces of King against Parliament, leading to the deaths of some 200,000 people on both sides. Hobbes was by nature a deeply peaceful and cautious man. He hated violence of all kin

WHO JOHN LOCKE?

WHO IS JOHN LOCKE? Below are resources for student ADULTS RESEARCH An essay on Locke’s legacy Written by George M. Stephens, “John Locke: His American and Carolinian Legacy” provides a basic but thorough grounding in the origins of Locke’s ideas in the context of the events of his biography. It emphasizes the role of property rights in Locke’s philosophy, and gives an expansive view of the ways in which the United States, and specifically the US Supreme Court, has viewed those property rights throughout the years. Works by John Locke (chronologically) Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina (1669) Composed jointly by Locke and his mentor Lord Shaftesbury, this document was intended to be used as the Constitution of the English Province of Carolina, though it was never officially adopted. It included some remarkably liberal (for 1669) ideas, ones that can be found elsewhere in Locke’s works: the idea that government legitimacy is contingent on the con

Thomas Hobbes BACKGROUND

Thomas Hobbes: Moral and Political Philosophy Hobbes The English philosopher Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) is best known for his political thought, and deservedly so. His vision of the world is strikingly original and still relevant to contemporary politics. His main concern is the problem of social and political order: how human beings can live together in peace and avoid the danger and fear of civil conflict. He poses stark alternatives: we should give our obedience to an unaccountable sovereign (a person or group empowered to decide every social and political issue). Otherwise what awaits us is a "state of nature" that closely resembles civil war – a situation of universal insecurity, where all have reason to fear violent death and where rewarding human cooperation is all but impossible. One controversy has dominated interpretations of Hobbes. Does he see human beings as purely self-interested or egoistic? Several passages support such a reading, leading some to think that h

2FACE SPEAK UP AS, DAVID MARK, ORTOM AND OTHER BENUE POLITICIANS SEEK FOR RE-ELECTION

2face Spits Fire: 2BABA WEEPS FOR BENUE AND NIGERIA AT LARGE OVER ONE SET OF PEOPLE IN THE GOV. Nigerians Should Stop Celebrating Criminals Popular afro-pop singer, 2Baba Idibia, has shared his thoughts on the forthcoming general elections in Nigerian. 2Face, who spoke to Showtime in a chat, advised the youths to stop celebrating criminally-minded politicians who are only out to loot public funds. “My advice to the youths is that we should begin to celebrate what is right. We should stop celebrating criminals; we should stop hyping people that have done nothing to benefit us. Imagine, someone wakes one morning and suddenly becomes a Senator with a lot of money; people will begin to celebrate him/her even when he has done nothing for his people. When you campaign for votes and you finally win, you’ve to have something to show for those votes. So, we need to begin to celebrate people who are genuine and not criminals”, he said. 2face Idibia Hopeful that Nigerians would not be dece
