PDP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES

President Muhammadu Buhari, who has only just returned yesterday after over a hundred days of medical leave, is yet to declare his interest in seeking a second term of office. The possibility of that happening cannot be ruled out as his loyalists and political associates have continued to fly that kite. But the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which was ousted from power in 2015 by the All Progressives Congress (APC), has vowed to make a comeback in 2019. The PDP’s resolve to upstage the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government was reinforced at its recent mini convention in Abuja where the party’s bigwigs vowed to dethrone the governing APC using the slogan: ‘Change the Change’. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had released the timetable for the 2019 elections in March this year, indicating that the next presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on February 16, 2019. History of Population Censuses in Nigeria HISTORY OF POPULATION CENSUSES IN NIGERIA

History of Population Censuses in Nigeria HISTORY OF POPULATION CENSUSES IN NIGERIA Nigeria has a long history of census takings spanning over a century. The first census was conducted in 1866 and this was followed by Censuses of 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. However, all these earlier censuses were restricted to Lagos Colony and its environs. The 1871 census marked the beginning of decennial census taking in Nigeria in line with the British decennial tradition. Following the amalgamation of the Lagos Colony and the Southern Protectorate in 1906, the 1911 census extended to some parts of the Southern Protectorate. It was marred by incomplete enumeration because some parts of the South had not recognized the legitimacy of the Colonial Government. The amalgamation of the Southern and Northern protectorates in 1914 by Lord Lugard provided the impetus for population census that had wider coverage. Like in other censuses, the results of 1921 census were population estimates based on tax re

PROF. ZACHARYS ANGER TO P.T.A. MEETING

BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY MEETING HELD ON 19 FEB. ,  2018. From Professor Zacharys Anger Gundu, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, BSU Makurdi. Ladies and gentlemen. I personally discourage governance of institutions on social media but we must also appreciate that the social media offers us an opportunity to explain issues to many people who otherwise may not be able to have quality information on what affects them. In this particular case, I would want to give the raw information and step back to allow you make up your mind on the issue. BSU has about 25,282 undergraduate students between 7 Faculties. At the moment, 13, 082 of these students are fully registered and have paid ALL their students charges. 6, 562 of these have paid their student charges but are not fully registered. Only 5,638 students have neither paid their student charges nor registered. These figures show that anyone blaming delayed salaries for the BSU challenge is only marketing mischief. Now let us try to und

importance of local government Autonomy in Nigeria

IM portance Of Local Govt Autonomy In Reviving Economy, Nigeria is struggling with local poverty and grassroots under-development. Economically, depressed nations face several challenges. Uniquely, economic depression is not of the same dimension across nations. Within each country, the challenges also vary from States to States, and within States, from local government or counties to counties. Several strategies are therefore employed, depending on the peculiarities of each state and local government. Nonetheless, our people at the grassroots are not finding it easy. Are our states’ chief executives culpable in the current fiscal squeeze and constraining strangulation across the States? My question is not directed at the usual allegations of corruption and mismanagement at state levels. That depends on how you analyze and read the situation. There is a consensus of sort that tackling local poverty and boosting depressed economy depends on virile local government system. Many analyst

Abstract of LOCAL GOVT

Abstract of LOCAL GOVT Although the paramountcy of chiefs was undone by colonial rule, traditional rulers have served as important adjuncts in the administration of post-colonial government in both Africa and Oceania. This paper examines the evolution of the chieftaincy, particularly as an agent of administration, in West Africa (Niger and Nigeria) and Melanesia (Vanuatu). Although French and British colonial regimes had distinctive policies regarding the use of “their” chiefs, post-colonial NigĂ©rien, Nigerian, and ni-Vanuatu governments have all come to rely on traditional rulers to aid in development activities. The degree of autonomy retained by traditional rulers varies, however: it is highest in Vanuatu, lowest in Niger. Differing conceptions and uses of tradition and “custom” help explain these variations. Five modern functions of traditional rulers are identified as contributing to development administration: 1) linkage or “brokering” between grassroots and capital; 2) exten

THE ROLE OF TRADITIONAL RULERS IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT UP TILL DATE

INTRODUCTION There has been change in the role of traditional rulers in Nigeria as it applies to community development, since the introduction of local government reforms of 1976 in the said reforms, leadership roles were clearly expressed, which states that it is not the intention of government to destroy the organic unity of the traditional institutions. The traditional emirate and chiefdom will remain, although their functions will be changed to accord with the present day circumstances. Although the paramount of chiefs was undone by colonial rule, traditional rulers have served as important adjuncts in the administration of post-colonial government in both Nigeria and Africa (William F.S. Miles, 2007). This in effect streamlined the procedure for the selection, recognition and roles of traditional rulers, therefore, formed the constitutional framework for traditional democracy, by a community selection of an acceptable ruler. There were the warrant chiefs during the indirect r
